The Cedar Cup – Geopora sumneriana

Rhona Sutherland

The first sighting of the Cedar Cup in Yorkshire was reported on March 7th 2017 in Austwick Hall near Settle, then on March 10th some were found under Cedars in the grounds of Castle Howard, followed on March 11th by a record from Boston Spa. I then found a small group under a big old cedar in the garden of the Milburn Arms in Rosedale Abbey on March 12th 2017.

Previously they had mainly been recorded in southern counties, as far north as Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire, except for a single record in 1998 from Darlington (VC66).

I saw some again in 2019 under the same trees in Castle Howard on 23 March, and yesterday on March 14th 2020, I looked under the tree in Rosedale Abbey and saw 3 specimens.

If you know of any big old Cedars in Ryedale please look in the soil underneath them for these large cup fungi developing as a rough brown sphere under the ground that breaks through the soil and splits open to form a cup and reveals a thick wall with a whitish inner lining.
