As I have only just been appointed as the Society’s recorder 1 have little to report. I suspect that the common frog has had a good breeding season, if our garden pond is anything to go by. Over forty pairs laid spawn, with pairing occurring from 28/3/99 onwards: this was a late start for frogs. Smooth newts arrived in good numbers, with mating rituals observed from 9/4/99 onwards. A large number of newtpoles were observed in June. About a dozen common toads arrived at the pond but did not breed.
